Benefit of Spinal Manipulation for Chronic Nashua Back Pain Relief

“Chronic” – not a term associated with good or happiness, is it? Chronic low back pain is on-going back pain of at least 3 months’ duration that just won’t stop. Moriarty Chiropractic welcomes frustrated, hurting chronic low back pain patients of all ages. Our gentle Nashua chiropractic service is often relieving, offering hope for a more comfortable day.

Chiropractic researchers and everyday clinical practitioners like your Nashua chiropractor at Moriarty Chiropractic witness the pain relief and function improvement. Some publish their outcomes for everyone to see! A newly published case report of a 67 year old male veteran dealing with chronic low back pain and occasional right leg pain documented relief with Cox® Technic care. The patient described having this pain for decades. In 4 weeks and 4 visits of flexion distraction treatment along with moist heat and soft-tissue mobilization, he reported improvement in his condition, decreased pain medication use, and enhanced mobility. (1) That’s a welcome outcome for this back pain sufferer!

WHAT’S UP WITH CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN? Spinal Manipulation’s Role

Chronic low back pain like that described by the veteran in this case report is very common and can be quite distressing. Spinal manipulation is endorsed for the management of chronic low back in many guidelines backed by such groups as the American Pain Society and the American College of Pain Physicians. (2,3) With chronic low back pain, central sensitization – the effect of repeated nerve stimulation has on the central nervous system - is purported to have a role in chronicity of pain.  Spinal manipulation’s advantage may well come from its impact on this sensitization. (4) That’s an advantage chronic back pain sufferers can accept.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (47 RCTs and 9211 participants) of spinal manipulation treatment for chronic low back pain reported that spinal manipulation produced similar effects to other suggested therapies of chronic low back pain (like exercise and drug therapy), was better than non-recommended intervention for short-term improvement, and had limited, mild-to-moderate, momentary adverse effects. (5) Another such meta-analysis determined that spinal manipulation looked to be a good alternative for pain relief and function improvement for chronic low back pain sufferers. (6) In a meta-analysis specifically focused on older (ages 65-91 y/o) chronic low back pain sufferers, the same deductions were found: spinal manipulation should be considered a positive treatment for the older patient with chronic low back pain for pain relief and function improvement. (7) Most spinal manipulation is done by chiropractors according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. (8) And chiropractors like yours at Moriarty Chiropractic studied extra in the delivery of the gentle, non-thrust form of spinal manipulation known as Cox® Technic which well recognized for its treatment of disc herniation and spinal stenosis pain as well as more routine spinal pain conditions.
