Could a Plant Compound Assist Protect Your Spinal Discs?
If you've ever managed disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs are important to your daily ease of movement and mobility. Now, promising new research is exploring a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to slow down disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a natural plant compound known as a flavonoid. It's already recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, but two studies published in 2026 took a closer look into how it may directly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin helps protect nucleus pulposus cells — the shock-absorbing cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by easing a specific inflammation pathway and improving a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this helps disc cells in getting rid of worn-out components and operating more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a distinct view. (2) Using cutting-edge genetic analysis, researchers pinpointed that fibrosis — a kind of fibrous buildup — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a key part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin appears effective as an anti-scarring agent, meaning it may help hinder this scarring process from worsening.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU
While additional research is required before quercetin becomes a standard part of disc care, these findings add to a increasing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can contribute a supportive role alongside conservative, non-surgical spinal care like chiropractic treatment. At Moriarty Chiropractic, we believe in a holistic approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's own healing.
